What’s the best way to resolve vaginal itching?

Are you experiencing itching around the vaginal area that is making you uncomfortable?  If so, you are probably interested in finding out the best way to resolve the problem and relieve your discomfort.

What causes vaginal itching?

There are a number of skin conditions that can cause vaginal itching, including lichen sclerosus, psoriasis, and eczema.  However, if tests indicate that these are not the source, the problem may be caused by vulvar contact dermatitis.

Vulvar contact dermatitis is a skin disorder that occurs as a consequence of exposure to an irritant that sparks an allergic reaction and triggers itching in the external genitalia skin.   Common irritants include body soaps, feminine hygiene products, shampoos, conditioners, toilet paper, and detergents.  These are all external factors.

However, vaginal itching can also be caused by internal factors, specifically, an altered microflora pattern.  This refers to changes in characteristics and the number of vaginal constituents.

What’s the best way to resolve vaginal itching?

Vaginal itching caused by irritants can be resolved by avoiding potential irritants.  Patients are therefore advised to use hypocontactant skincare products.

Fowler GYN International (FGI) recommends the FeminaRx Pure SkinCare Collection.  FeminaRx is specially designed for women with sensitive external genitalia skin.  It contains products that provide moisture for the vaginal area.

In cases where vaginal itching is caused by an altered vaginal microflora pattern, restoring balance to the microflora will resolve the vaginal itching.   This can be done by conducting a Vaginal Fluid Analysis (VFA) test, to identify the vaginal constituents.  Once the results are in, a customized treatment protocol can be formulated, to bring the vaginal constituents back into balance (learn more).
