Some women experience chronic vulvar pain that leaves them feeling frustrated and perplexed because it is often difficult to get a definitive diagnosis. As a result, they often experience years of emotional distress and wonder if the pain they are feeling is normal.
Is Vulvar Pain Normal?
Vulvar pain is not normal and is typically the sign of a condition known as vulvodynia. Vulvodynia is a condition that is characterized by pain in the vulva that does not have an identifiable cause. The pain associated with vulvodynia may be localized at the vaginal opening and the vulva.
Vulvodynia is typically caused by an altered microflora pattern. The vaginal microflora is a delicate ecosystem that consists of a variety of microorganisms including ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria. The good bacteria are generally dominant and keep the bad bacteria in check. However, if there is a shift in the bacterial milieu the resulting overgrowth of harmful bacteria will alter the vaginal secretions that bathe the vaginal tissues. This results in pain and other symptoms.
Treating Vulvar Pain
Treating vulvar pain involves restoring balance to the vaginal microflora. At Fowler GYN International (FGI) this is achieved with the help of a vaginal fluid analysis (VFA) test.
The VFA test evaluates the vaginal constituents and provides quantitative analysis that determines if an altered vaginal microflora pattern is present. The VFA test involves taking a small sample of vaginal secretion to which chemicals and stains are added, to disclose specific features. The fluid then undergoes microscopic analysis using a phase-contrast microscope to determine the results.
If an altered vaginal microflora pattern is confirmed, FGI will devise an individualized treatment protocol to restore the vaginal ecosystem towards normal.
