Does having a short vaginal canal affect you negatively?

While most women probably don’t give any thought to the length of their vaginal canal, there are women out there that have a vagina that is shorter than the average.  If you experience any vaginal discomfort, it may be an indication that there is a problem.   But does having a short vaginal canal affect you negatively.

Can you really have a short vaginal canal?

It’s estimated that the average length of the vaginal canal is about 3-6 inches, but some women are born with a vagina that is shorter than the average.  In addition, there are conditions that can cause the vaginal mucosa to shrink, and this in effect makes the vaginal canal shorter.

Shrinkage of the vaginal mucosa is primarily caused by a drop in estrogen levels.  Estrogen plays an important role in the overall health of the vagina, because it keeps it thick, elastic, and lubricated.  A decline in estrogen can cause the vaginal tissue to become dry, leading to a decrease in the length and diameter of the vaginal canal (learn more).

Having a short vaginal canal can certainly impact you negatively, especially as it relates to intercourse.  Women with a short vaginal canal are more likely to experience pain during deep penetration, along with some soreness and itching.  Some women with a short vaginal canal also feel a lot of discomfort when inserting a tampon.
